The Shawnee Mission South office is quite a busy place. Diane Johnson, the perky, smiley receptionist, is always greeting someone new to the office.
“So it’s 1:30 and I still don’t have my lunch done yet, and I started early today,” Johnson says. “I have my lunch done and it’s only 1:45!”
There is a constant stream of staff, students, and parents coming into the office. Many parents bring their kids things they left at home, such as keys, clothes, or athletic gear.
Donna Callewart, the principal’s secretary, is busy opening letters and filing paperwork to keep the office in good shape.
“I wonder how many paper cuts we’re going to go home with tonight,” Callewart says right before getting a paper-cut from an envelope.
When there aren’t parents or teachers walking in and out of the doors, all you can hear is the slight rustling of papers, keyboard clicks, the occasional cough from the back rooms, and desk drawers opening quietly. Though the copier is always whining, and every second the clock ticks your ears off, the office has a calm, relaxing atmosphere.
When walking into the office, you are instantly greeted with Raider spirit, from a Rocky the Raider bobble head to the SMS posters hung on every wall. There are posters of sports teams, theatre productions and extra curricular activities on every wall in the room.
In all, the office is a busy place, and the staff and students in it keep the school running.
