I get on Twitter frequently. Several times, I’ve come across gossip twitters for schools like Shawnee Mission East and Shawnee Mission West. I always thought to myself, what would happen if this ever happened at South?

Most would agree that it’s easier to say something behind someone’s back, instead of to his face. Social media has always been an outlet for expressing feelings that most never had the courage to say out loud. Through newspapers, blogs, Facebook, and recently Twitter, people can say something without receiving the face-to-face backlash.

Twitter is a social media network where students tweet their daily thoughts. Recently, gossip twitters have been spreading throughout high schools. At South, an unknown student started the gossip Twitter @SouthShit and since then, more than eight Twitters have popped up.

One of the most vulgar Twitters, @Raw_dOg_GaNg, continues to tweet. With tweets that talk about female genitalia and what sexual acts females do to males, it’s hard to believe that the Twitter has 152 followers. They commonly talk about not using condoms and the graphic things they do during intercourse. Let’s be honest, high school students can’t get enough of it, even though half of their tweets are vulgar, degrading, and extremely inappropriate. It’s disgusting. It makes me embarrassed to associate myself with these people. We always talk about our school pride, and how honored we should be to go to South. Quite honestly, it’s people like this that make me wish I didn’t have to associate with other teenagers at all.

Another twitter that hasn’t quit tweeting is @OceanGang__. Just like Raw Dog Gang, they don’t censor the profanity and vulgar comments. The Twitter holds nothing back when it comes to talking about weed and other illegal drugs. And like Raw Dog Gang, they post explicitly about sexual intercourse.

Several Twitters have even called out and named certain students in their tweets. The Twitters have allegedly exposed students for being pregnant, having sex, and participating in drugs and alcohol. One Twitter even called out a student for allegedly cheating on her boyfriend. The Tweeters are just looking for drama, and chances are, if THEY were ever tweeted about they’d be extremely offended themselves.

Consider this, maybe the students that created the twitters and continue to tweet about having sex all the time, doing drugs, and drinking alcohol, etc. possibly don’t get any “tail” themselves, and spend most of their weekends getting plastered and high. And the guys bragging about their big genitalia are, are most likely lacking in that area and tweeting about how “big” it is due to their low self confidence.

That’s why most people do it right? They put down other people to make themselves feel better. It’s a common defense mechanism most of us use. However, most of the time, the bully turns out to actually be the insecure one.

The people who made the twitters hide behind anonymity. So are they trying to escape the consequences and repercussions of their inappropriate actions? They’re cowards. Without being able to tweet or Facebook post, they would keep their mouths shut and wouldn’t have the kahunas to say anything to someone’s face. Getting around them is simple: stop following these twitters. Without followers, the tweeters have no power.

Basically the people that made these Twitters are extremely insecure. They rely on other people’s approval for their own self confidence. They put down others to build themselves up. Through their tweets it’s pretty evident that they have a very vulgar and disgusting view of people and think making inappropriate sexual slurs somehow makes them cool and popular. The funny thing is, I am going to be extremely harassed and put down for writing this. But what’s the worst they can do, tweet at me?
