Shawnee Missions South’s literary magazine, Inscriptions, is accepting art, photo or writing entries from now until Wednesday, April 1. Submission forms are available in Room 195 or the library. Each year the 32-page colorful magazine displays students’ unique and individual talents when it comes to poetry, illustration and photography.

“This magazine allows students to express themselves. It’s one of the main outlets published for students here at South. You can see all of the creative talents,” senior Michelle Chan and member of the magazine staff said.

Chan not only helps put together the magazine but also submits her photographs into it as well. One of her photos, “Escape,” made it into the issue alongside a poem by Arionna Washington called “You!” Chan’s photograph is of an exit door at the back of a building with vine and leaf covered walls.

“I was on vacation with my friend and I saw the door and thought it looked really mystical. It seemed like it was from a fairy tale,” she said.

Chan helps with editing and layout on the staff.

“I enjoy reviewing all the students work. We match up a lot of the art pieces with poems,” she said.

Chan, along with editor Julia Rose and other members of the staff put the magazine together after selecting pieces in April.

Inscriptions will be sold for $1 during the contributors reception in the library Tuesday, May 5 and at yearbook distribution May 15. Anybody is welcome to enter their creations and ideas to the magazine. Submissions are also accepted at [email protected].
