15 Questions with Avery Dorsey

 

2015 Shawnee Mission South graduate, Avery Dorsey, answered a few questions to help students get a closer look at his life as a freshman in college at American University in Washington D.C.

EH What are you majoring in and what do you plan to with your career after college?

AD: “My major as of right now is international relations, and my possible double major Chinese language,political science, I plan to work overseas and either be a foreign diplomat working on foreign policy.

 

EH What was the most stressful part of getting ready for college?

AD: Preparing myself to leave my family and friends, having to adapt to a new environment.

 

EH: What was your motivation to get the grades you did?

AD: Travel and get out of Kansas and to get a great education that will give me the tools to succeed.

 

EH: How has attending South helped you as a college student?

AD: Teachers helped me to prepare for the workload in college.

 

EH: What made you want to attend American University in Washington D.C.?

AD: “Because of the major and the opportunities for  internships in relation to major and location and small class size

 

EH:What made you want to major in international relations?

AD: I’ve always wanted to travel my entire life and my sophomore year I took international relations with Mr. Weaver and he did current events every day and it enlightened me on what was going on around the world and made me want to make a difference.

 

EH: What do you like most about college life?

AD: The freedom and free time to do what I want and take classes that interest me

 

EH:What do you like about American University?

AD: The people and teachers and everyone is really nice and everyone is passionate about what their teaching or learning.

 

EH: If you had the chance, what would you tell yourself as an incoming freshman at South?

AD: Join everything, get involved and meet a lot of people and go to the sports games, make connections with teachers.

 

EH: What do you miss about life in Kansas City and as a high school student?

AD: Friends in drum-line and drum-line as a whole, cruising with my friends

 

EH: What teacher impacted you most throughout high school?

AD: Ms.Dosland, she really influenced me to reach out and apply for scholarships.

 

EH: Did high school fly by or go slow?

AD: High school went by slow day by day but, looking back, t went by fast.

 

EH: If you could relive one night in your four year tenure at Shawnee Mission South what would it be and why?

AD: Graduation,I had been looking forward to graduating for a long time and it was so great to know all my future was ahead of me as I was walking across the stage.

 

EH: What information or class do you feel like has helped you the least now that you’re out of highschool?

AD: Science just because it has no relation to my major at all, but all classes helped me get to where I am.

 

EH: Were you forced to change your study habits or techniques due to time and/or difficulty or your courses?

AD: I have to set aside hours and hours of time just to study, and here it’s hard to find a workspace that’s quiet.
