The Lady Raiders won the 29th annual Mid-America Classic. They won their first game against Wichita Northwest 67-15 highlighted by senior Azailah Funches eclipsing the 1000-point threshold, joining teammate Camryn Smith in that club.
In the second game, they played an adamant McPherson team and the game was close from the start. Despite foul trouble with seniors Ashley VanElders, Jocelyn Moore and sophomore Leila Berndt all having four fouls. Funches fouled out while playing the physical and strong McPherson team that wasn’t afraid of contact or laying out and getting on the floor for loose balls. Still the Lady Raiders managed to pull out the win 61-47, moving on to the championship game against Olathe South.
“You don’t have to tell them much to get ready for a championship game, or you’re in trouble in terms of energy,” head coach Mark Western said when asked what he was going to say to his team to get them ready for the championship game.
The championship game against Olathe South was close as the Lady Raiders were down 26-28 at the half. By the end of the 3rd quarter, the Raiders took hold of the lead and held on, as they won with a final score of 48-41. They will use this tournament win as a good momentum boost looking ahead to their next game on Tuesday at Olathe North.
