The Raiders of Shawnee Mission South traveled to Olathe Northwest for a Sunflower League matchup against the Ravens. The Raiders came in with a record of 11-0 coming off a home win against Metro Academy. The Ravens came in 7-4 with their last game being a loss against Blue Valley High School.
Olathe Northwest won the tip and scored first. They held off the Raiders from scoring for the first half of the quarter until sophomore Conor Kerrigan scored the Raiders’ first points. The offense heated up, scoring seven points, leading to a Raven timeout. The Raiders got some huge blocks and dominated the offensive glass. At the end of the first quarter, the Raiders were up 10-8.
The Raiders came out hot in the second quarter scoring first and going on a run up five with 2:26 left in the quarter. Junior captain Drake Debaun got his second foul and the Ravens called a timeout after going down 21-10. The score was the same at the end of the second quarter as the Raiders took their momentum into the locker room.
The Ravens scored first out of the break, but junior Max Mckenna answered with a three. The Raiders were seizing their momentum despite the physicality shown by the Ravens and Debaun getting into foul trouble. Despite that, junior Ben Allen came up big scoring seven points in the quarter finishing the game with nine points. Raiders were up 33-24 going into the fourth quarter.
Raiders scored first and took that momentum with them through the quarter leading to a three by senior Brody Featherston to silence the crowd and a Raven timeout. DeBaun fouled out but the Raiders stayed strong up 41-32 with 2:13 left and a Raven timeout. South held strong and won by a score of 46-33. The Raiders move to 12-0 with their next game being at home against Olathe North on Tuesday, February 4.
