Dropped your book in the ocean? Never to fear, the little free library is here. The Little Free Library is encouraging more readers.
The Little Free Library, located in the corner of the Green Bean, is a more accessible mini library compared to the normal one.
“It’s a similar, basically [the] same concept as little free libraries you might see around your neighborhoods, but instead of being outside, we just have a shelf that’s inside the Green Bean,” librarian Julie Fales said. “There’s books on there that people can just take, and if people have extra books laying around their house, we can put those on there for another kid to pick up. So it’s kind of like a take one, bring one back. Or even just take one, and I don’t care if you bring one back.”
The books in the little free library come from donations. Most of the books come from students and teachers, and mainly consist of book owners discarding more childish books.
Since 2019, the little free library gives access to books. Especially for people who may be reluctant to actually check a book out because they’re bad about bringing stuff back, returning or losing something, or having it damaged at home. The location, hiding in the back of the Green Bean, doesn’t help its acknowledgment.
“The other thing is, it’s kind of far away,” Fales said. “So I don’t necessarily always see somebody take something, and I will take books from there, and usually before some of our breaks, stand up in the hallway and give them out for free. And I always give away a bunch of books that way. It’s a little more incentive.
Fales has set up book club posters around to encourage more members. Additionally with events such as Valentine’s Day, there are unique appearances to encourage reading.
“I think on Valentine’s Day, we did a blind date with a book. We got the displays out in the main lobby. [The holiday showcasing] kind of stays by the month. I just had the Hispanic Heritage Month display cart, but that one ended today or yesterday.”
