On September 26, South’s and Indian Woods Middle School’s orchestras performed for Oktoberfest in South’s Main Gym. This concert has been a traditional concert since the ’80s and ’90s, making it an exciting day in many orchestra student’s fall.
Senior Lillyan Veal, a fourth-year member of orchestra has participated every year in the show and gave input, mentioning this concert forms a special bond between the high school orchestra and the companions in Germany.
“We celebrate Oktoberfest as a homage to our friends in Germany who we do an exchange with every four years. It’s a very special relationship between them and us,” Veal said.
Oktoberfest is the world’s largest volksfest celebrated in Germany. A volksfest is a large event in German-speaking countries in which they have attractions such as amusement rides, games of chance and skill, and food and merchandise vendors plus more.
“The orchestra has since made it into a concert or event where the different orchestras play music, food is available, and has a kid fest,” Veal said “All of this happens right before the Homecoming football game.”
