Thirteen years later the humor in American Reunion has still not grown up. The boys are back and even though their lives are dramatically different, their immature sense of humor stays right where it should be. Some critics say that the humor in American Reunion should have evolved over the years to appeal to more people, but I disagree. Why should they change the formula for a movie series that, when first released in 1999, was the defining comedy movie of an entire generation? Most of the time there is a direct correlation between how many sequels have been produced and the quality of the movies, but American Reunion is closer to the original than all the others.
One of the things that makes this movie great is that it is (most likely) the last American Pie movie that will be released, making it the end of an era. American Pie started a new sub-genre of comedy movie that contains raunchy, extremely profane, and hilarious situations that have spawned the creation of some of the funniest movies of the 21st century such as Old School, Stepbrother, Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. So if you like any of those movies, along with many others, than you ultimately have American Pie to thank for it, and American Reunion is the perfect ending to an incredibly entertaining, and funny series.
The plot of the movie is the best part. It connects with the older crowd that has been through or is going through the same mental distress as the characters in the movie: the fear of finally growing up and the dullness of everyday adult life, and it appeals to the younger audience who have the fear of getting older and making the transition into adulthood. Even though the main focus of the movie is not to feel the sweet, sweet, sensation of love for the first time, it is rarely dull and has plenty of the same raunchy jokes that American Pie supporters have come to love.
