When the Shawnee Mission South bowlers hit the lanes, there will be a bold new addition to the team. The Raider bowlers are adorned with new uniform shirts made of a lightweight material similar to a golf polo. These new shirts, according to senior Jessie Steffee, actually help with bowling techniques and mechanics.
“The old shirts were stiff and constricting, whereas these new shirts are a lot more loose. They provide a better range of motion,” Steffee said.
Steffee, a former state qualifier is hoping to up her average score. She has been consistently bowling between 170 to 180 in practices and hopes to see her meet scores improve. One other significant difference from years past, is that there are finally equal numbers between the male and female bowlers.
The Raiders recently defeated Olathe South and Shawnee Mission Northwest at a meet. A school record was set with 2,701 pins thanks in part to strong performances by senior captain Daniel Coup who bowled a 771 series for a 257 average, junior Terry Adams, senior Alex Brown, senior Kevin McAulay, senior Matt Teel, and junior Josh Hasenleder.
All puns aside, the Raider bowlers are on a roll. The large underclassmen group will help the team in years to come. With fresh-to-death new polos and a winning attitude, the Raider bowling team hopes to make the school proud and possibly bring home a state championship.
