In the Kansas 5-A state championship game the Shawnee Mission South Raiders brought home South’s first title since 1990, 46-40 over the Lansing Lions.
South got off to a fast start in the opening quarter leading 14-7 leading the way in the first was sophomore Dainan Swoope who was 3 for 3 in the first quarter from the 3- point line. Up 28-18 South dominated the half in all aspects.
In the second half, Lansing made a run led by senior Roy Clayter who finished with 14, and had a monster put-back dunk in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the Lions cut it to one with 3:05 left in the game. Quickly after that senior Josh Pederson nailed a 3-pointer to make the lead 40-36. The Lions struggled from the line; whereas, South went 12-12, including four late clutch free throws by junior Devin Newsome.
As the final buzzer rang, the team stormed the court, and the crowd chanted, “We Own State.”
“The feeling is unreal, something that will stick with you forever,” junior Nick Oliver said.
