Cheer Clinic Inspires Future Varsity Cheerleaders

Aspiring cheerleaders from ages five to fourteen gathered in South’s main gym on the morning of Saturday, August 18th to learn cheers and dances from the Varsity cheerleaders. For the annual cheer clinic it’s $30-$35 for each kid to participate and with 140 kids, it’s no question that the cheer clinic is the largest fundraiser for the cheer program.

At the cheer clinic, the girls get put into nine groups, based off their grade, and each group has three varsity cheerleaders to teach them material. This year, the varsity cheerleaders taught each group two cheers and dances from 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Then, at 11:30 a.m. there is a showcase of everything they’ve learned for the parents in which the pep band also comes and plays.

The girls who attend the cheer clinic also have the opportunity to cheer with the varsity cheerleaders on the sidelines at the first home game, and the parents are also given two free tickets. While the weather wasn’t the best at the start of the game, almost all the kids still showed up to experience the sidelines. With such a large number of girls, the cheerleaders spread all the way down the track on the South side. The girls were able to cheer and dance the entire first half of the game, and then at halftime the girls were returned to their parents and were able to sit in the stands to watch the continuation of the game.

The cheer clinic is such a great experience for both the kids and varsity cheerleaders. It shows the varsity cheerleaders how many girls look up to them every time they perform.
