ABC, Easy as RG3: Fantasy Struggle

Avery Dorsey, Staff Writer

Losing by a margin of three points, I watched helplessly, knowing I couldn’t do anything but reminisce over my mistakes. My lack of consistent running backs has really taken its toll on my fantasy team, leaving me to search through the litter of the waiver wire. My old running backs of Adrian Peterson, Darren Sproles, and Terrance West have either been suspended, hurt or benched, harming my fantasy team. In week 7, the runts of the waiver wire running backs, once again, reminded me of my fantasy troubles.

My problem recently is my fantasy team is only producing a couple of positive scores while the rest of my team lets me down with minimal storage. Week in and week out, San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates and Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson have been beneficial towards my fantasy team. The Chargers’ slim loss to the Chiefs was highlighted by Antonio Gates 61 yard and one touchdown day for 12 fantasy points. Only targeted five times for four receptions, Jordy Nelson had one touchdown on 80 reception yards for 14 fantasy points.

After a rough start to Sundays game against the Rams, Russell Wilson returned after halftime firing on all cylinders. Being his usual self, Wilson scrambled for a staggering 106 yards on just seven rushes for one touchdown. On top of that, he threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns. Despite losing 28-26, Wilson led the Seahawks to a miraculous comeback proving his versatility in a 36 fantasy point performance.

As the fantasy season has progressed, my wide receiver and especially running back role has depleted, the waiver wire leaving me with little to nothing. Ahmad Bradshaw and Jordy Nelson have been my only consistent players in those roles. The second I picked up prominent prospects like Isaiah Crowell, James Jones and Andre Williams, they immediately lacked in production. Crowell is handed literally one touch a game, his role completely gone to Ben Tate. Jones and Williams receive a decent amount of touchdowns, but can’t seem to find the endzone for struggling their teams.

For myself, I’ll have to research deep into the waiver wire for key matchups based on risk and statistics. The thing about the NFL is that anyone can win at anytime, and you never know who’s going to produce that week. My luck and research hasn’t been there for me thus far, but my ultimate goal is the playoffs where in the past I’ve shined. The past two years, I’ve made cinderella comebacks to the championship, winning last years for the crown.
