Culture Club
December 19, 2014
On Dec. 18, South’s Culture Club, sponsored by English teachers Travis Gatewood, Drew Baranowski, and Lindsey McFall, had the opportunity to visit the Wade Brothers photography and film studio. The students gathered at South and then carpooled to the studio.
Students were able to meet some of the people who work at the studio, including a South graduate, Lyndon Wade, who started the business alongside his brother and his mom.
“Getting to visit the studio was a really great opportunity, especially for people wanting to go into art fields or do things that may not seem as practical,” senior Julia Rose said, “It was really cool to see how someone who started right where we are, is able to start a business like this.”
The students got to hear about the backgrounds of the people who worked there. They gave tips on how to get started going into film or photography. The owners all had different backgrounds; some went to art or film school, and others just went straight to work. They all believe however that the best way to really learn how to do film or photography and to get better at it is to just get out there and do it. To start practicing as much as you can and take any jobs you can, even if you work for free.
After hearing about the studio and getting a tour, the club went to Grinders for dinner.
“Being a part of Culture Club has really opened my eyes to cool things right here in Kansas City,” Rose said, “it has also showed me that you really can do anything you set your mind to.”
