Rising Sun: My Neighbor Seki-kun Shatters the Funny Bone
December 11, 2015
Hey there! It’s time for another Rising Sun, and today’s mini-review is for My Neighbor Seki-kun, a show that doesn’t just tickle your funny bone, it completely shatters it.
My Neighbor Seki-kun is a comedy series about a girl named Rumi Yokoi who just wants to pass her classes. That proves to be incredibly difficult because a boy named Seki is sitting next to her in every class, and he’s always playing with something. It’s a simple premise, and each variation only gives you five minutes of story, but it still manages to be really funny.
It could be the ridiculous ways Seki fools around, like grabbing a bunch of erasers to play dominoes, or using shogi and go* pieces to (from Rumi’s perspective) tell a story. Another possible root of the humor is that Rumi just can’t help but watch Seki goof off, but then be forced to play the fall girl for him. Or it could just be the expertise of the voice actors and the animation staff in providing the over-the-top scenarios found within the show. Whatever the root is, the show gives you a good laugh in a short time.
My Neighbor Seki-kun is a fun little series on Crunchyroll that serves as a hilarious time-killer. Unlike other shows, you could finish this one in less than three hours, since there are 25 episodes, and each one is only five minutes. Just make sure you search “Tonari no Seki-kun” or you’re not going to find it.
* Shogi is essentially Japanese chess and Go is a strategy game revolving around setting up boundaries.
By the way, I might sound like an egotist for saying this here, but my second video game, Lloyd 2, is now available on my website lloydthemonkey.com.
