Deadpool, formerly Wade Winston Wilson, is an anti-hero that is absolutely insane. Featured in numerous X- Men films and comics in the late 90s and early 2000s; he is a Marvel Comic anti hero that resurfaced Feb. 12, 2016. Featured on the silver screen again, Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) fills the massive chasm of this demented character, that more accurately portrays this comic book figure.

“Deadpool” was originally written by Fabian Nicieza and illustrated by Rob Liefeld in the 1991 comic, “New Mutants #98″. In this comic, the new character was depicted as a supervillain when he made his first appearance. After the release of an issue of “X-Force”, Deadpool evolved into the role of an antihero.

He is a disfigured and mentally unstable mercenary (someone primarily concerned with making money at the expense of ethics) with the superhuman ability to heal at an accelerated rate. Combined with superhuman strength, katana bearing skills and martial arts training, Deadpool is a threatening comic character. Although he has many dangerous and villainous abilities, the “Merc with a Mouth” is actually very human with a talkative nature and tendency to break the fourth wall, which adds a humorous effect to his film and video game.

More outrageous than humorous at times, Deadpool has an overarching personality, or personalities I should say, because part of his ridiculous activity is based on his mental instability. After being placed into the Weapon-X program, he was taken into labs and tested, which lead to the development of his regenerative powers. Now some comic characters are labeled as “crazy,” but Deadpool is insane. Not confirmed by writers and illustrators, but Deadpool is suspected (by fans and comic enthusiasts) as having multiple personality disorder, or even schizophrenia. He has two inner monologues who often talk interact with him, which is when he most often breaks the fourth wall. He breaks the fourth wall in his narration as well as in his dialogue, which points to the audience numerous times.

The best part about this character is that he is aware of his fictional nature. Also, throughout the entire film, Deadpool recognizes that he is a super/mutant/antihero. His awareness points to previous parts of the Weapon X program, like where Deadpool interacts with Wolverine and some of the X-Men.

Back to the movie, “Deadpool” highlights most of Wade Wilson’s history and background, similar to how the video game does: with flashbacks and character interactions to reveal more information. So, the explanation of how Wade Wilson became Deadpool does span over more than half of the movie, but the order and clever presentation of the flashbacks distracts from the lack of conflicts within the plot. To be fair, there was an intense main plot: Deadpool tries to heal his burnt looking skin to return to his long-term girlfriend. He seeks the help of the man who gave him regenerative powers in the beginning, Ajax. All the while, Deadpool interacts with members of the Weapon X program, like Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. They help him fight Ajax and his partner Angel Dust to resolve the plot.

So, the plot is very complex and understandable, but there was more than enough background, with some useless information added in for dramatic or humorous effect. Overall, the plot was built up and resolved in the final minutes of the film, and in the concluding moments, Deadpool is joking around, throwing banter about, as he does normally, but alludes to the possibility of another film.

Stan Lee, and the Marvel team of writers, illustrators and designers have formulated the perfect sequence for comic hero movies, and as a flourishing franchise, Deadpool’s audience will be pleased to see another instalment in the future. BeFunky Collage
