[Rating:1/5]
With nasally vocals and generic, poppy beats, Jessica Simpson has defeated the purpose of a family Christmas album.
Happy Christmas, a compilation of old holiday classics, is nothing but a pop album in disguise.
Tracks like “Mary Did You Know” and “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” contain cheesy instrumentals and breathy, almost teeny-bopper vocals.
Simpson’s rendition of “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” is probably the best track on the album, with a pleasant, old-fashioned orchestra played at a smooth, easy tempo.
The same cannot be said for “Carol of the Bells,” a classic choral piece, in which Simpson’s whiny, artificial voice turned horribly irritating and insect-like.
The rehashed songs and generic sound does no justice to a new Christmas album aimed toward the average American family. Simpson successfully butchered almost every classic Christmas song on the album.
All in all, Happy Christmas would be at the very bottom of my gift list this year.
