The Environmental Education area receives a new turtle pen courtesy of an Eagle Scout project.

For the past two weeks South’s tortoises have been enjoying their personal bamboo pin. The pin was created so that the tortoises could go outside without having a lab watch over them so they wouldn’t wander away.

According to environmental education teacher P.J. Born, an Eagle Scout came to him with the idea for the project and they collaborated on the design for a little play pin for the tortoises.

The pin is made out of bamboo poles and PVC piping stuck in the ground to hold the bamboo in place. This way, once it gets cooler out, Born can just take the pipes and bamboo out of the ground and store them away until the spring.

The tortoises tend to be outside whenever the sun is out to get exercise and sun bathe. So far the pin has worked out nicely according to Born.
