Review: The World Ends with You

The World Ends with You (TWEWY) is an action roleplaying game that takes place in Shibuya, the shopping district of Tokyo, Japan. The game is only available on the Nintendo DS, but can be played on the Nintendo 3DS thanks to its capabilities.

So once upon a time, the main character Neku Sakuraba, a young, antisocial teenager who strives not to conform, wakes up in the middle of the scramble crossing of Shibuya, not remembering why is he there or what happened. Later on he discovers a pin that allows him to scan the thoughts of other people. Annoyed about other people’s problems and thoughts, later he is attacked by strange creatures called “Noise” and he is forced to retreat.

Then an amazing intro scene is played, with upbeat pop-like music, and the game’s unique art style gives you a small taste of what TWEWY has to offer, from shady men with wings, other types of noise, and the other “Players” that you are going to meet with.

After retreating Neku finds himself at the statue of Hachiko, a famous dog known for its loyalty to its master. He is attacked once again by more noise, but meets another “Player” Shiki Misaki, a bubbly teenager, who aspires to be a seamstress and travels around with her very first creation, Mr.Mew a stuffed animal that Neku mistakes for as a pig. Together they form a pact, and finally defeat the noise. Shiki afterwards explains that they are in a game, and if they shall fail, they shall be erased from the face of the earth.

NOT INTERESTED YET?  YA SHOULD BE RIGHT NOW.

TWEWY has a unique battling system in fighting the noise, having Neku the main character on the bottom screen, and your partner at the top screen fighting the same noise that you encounter, both sharing one single HP bar. Using the stylus and touchpad for the bottom screen and using the X Y A B buttons to control your partner on the top screen for left handers, or the direction pad if right handed. Characters have their own ways of fighting, or as they call their “Psychs” Neku uses a variety of pins having a secret power within them, from shooting rounds of energy, sending shockwaves, Psychokinesis, Pyrokinesis and many more. Shiki Misaki fights by controlling her stuffed animal, Mr. Mew by scratching or beating up the noise.

The players can mix and match numerous different types of pins to match their play style or how they decide on how to deal with the noise, and their partner on the top screen has their own sick moves to erase the noise. Another rad aspect about the game is you can change the difficulty anytime, from “Oh my god I can finish this game in a day” to “Oh god what just happened.” There are three ways the players can make it easier or harder on themselves, controlling the top screen partner, whether you manually control or it have them work things on their own within a set amount of seconds. The player can also change how much HP (hit points) you have, which increases the chances of loot (Or as the game calls it BLING), and the usual difficulty on how hard enemies hit. They scale from EASY, MEDIUM, HARD, and ULTIMATE, the type of difficulty changes the rarity of bling the player can acquire.

The game’s soundtrack consists of numerous types of j-pop type upbeat music, slow music and I don’t know it’s hard to explain, you just HAVE to listen to it. AND IF YOU’RE SAYING YOU DON’T HAVE A FAVORITE, YOU ARE LYING AND THAT IS BAD.

There is so much more in the game but I am purposely leaving it out because, that’s for you to explore and I don’t want to spoil it, it’ll ruin the magic and experience.

Head on down to your nearest Gamestop and ask for the game, it should be pretty cheap or kinda cheap. Maybe like $5 or $10.
