SMS’ Improv Troupe

One of the many traditions of the theatre program is their improv troupe. This group of comedic actors perform improv games where they must make up their lines, scenes and movements on the fly. The troupe performs three to four shows a year in South’s little theatre, or LT for short.

Each show, the LT is packed with students and teachers laughing as the group performs many of their outrageous games. The games can vary from one where a member of the troupe has to guess who they are and why they are on trial to one where two of three members can only say a phrase and ask a question they pulled from a hat, that someone from the audience suggested.

“We’ve brought back some old games from when I was a freshman and we’ve been re-incorporating them into our shows again,” senior Kyle Fairfax said.

Fairfax is one of the three captains of the troupe, the other two being Seniors Molly White and Jackson Spencer. This year, like last year, the three hand picked Repertory Theatre students who auditioned to be on the troupe.

“How we normally decide who’ll be on the troupe is we’ll play basic improv games. What we look for is someone who will contribute the ability to keep a scene going, provide humor to a scene and can never let a scene die, along with their own element that they can bring to the troupe,” Spencer said.

In the eyes of their captains’, this year’s troupe has been great and continues to improve with each show.

“I think over all everyone has a good working chemistry and in general is excited to do it. We all feel honored to be on the troupe because 30 to 35 people audition and there’s just a few people in the troupe. They all work hard and are fun to work with. I feel the seniors in the troupe are definitely confident in the underclassmen for next year,” White said.

South’s 2014 improv troupe’s last show of the year will be May 8th. The troupe predicts it to be the best one yet with everyone’s favorite improv games being played and how far the members have come.

All three captains and the troupe’s members promise to keep you laughing through the whole show, and ask you to be sure to catch it  May 8. The members go on to state that you wont regret it, and they hope to see you there.
