Jo Jones Q&A

What prompted you to becoming healthy?

I’m an athlete, so I’m not eating things that are bad for my body, I can’t perform as well, get really tired, and don’t feel my best. So when I put good in, I’ll get good out.

Does your diet change when you during sport seasons?

No, my sport season is year round. I’m never out of season, so I always have to be on my game. I play soccer year round, for a club called Sporting Blue Valley. I’ve been playing soccer for 14 years.

If you could have any desert in the world, what would it be? Why?

Cookie cake. Cookie cake is my favorite food. I only eat it pretty much as a reward so if I do something really good, then I eat it, or at birthdays. I love it.

What do you eat on a typical basis?

Breakfast: Steel cut oatmeal with flax seeds, chia seeds and bananas.

“It’s really good. You should try it. It’s really healthy and good for you. Steel cut oatmeal is unprocessed oats, so it’s a lot better for you (then processed oatmeals).”

Lunch: When I’m at school I’ll try to get two servings of vegetables and I’ll either eat a turkey wrap, or a grilled chicken sandwich and replace the bun with lettuce.

If I’m not at school then I like to cook something. I like to cook healthy dishes. If I’m on the run I will usually just eat a salad. My favorite salad is from Spin, and it’s called a Sonoma salad, which consists of chicken, grapes, raisins, goat cheese.

Dinner: I try to get a lot of protein. So I’ll either have a protein shake, along with scrambled eggs, or have salmon and chicken. I always will have vegetables. My favorite kind of vegetable is asparagus, and spinach. I eat spinach everyday. When I make a protein shake I put spinach and kale in it. You can’t taste it.

What is your favorite healthy snack food?

Key Lime Greek Yogurt with Granola

Protein Shake Recipe:

I make these smoothies all the time. I might have them for breakfast sometime, along with the oatmeal. It’s really filling.

Have you ever tried any fad diets? Did they work for you?

There is a juice cleanse, but I never stick with it long enough to see if it works because I miss food. They are a lot of work. I’m more about just eating healthy I eat healthy to be healthy, not to lose weight.

What do you think about the food that South Serves for Lunch?

I think they have some good options, but they can definitely look to have healthier options. They could get rid of some of the non-healthy food, and replace it with some healthy food. There is room for improvement.
