ABC, Easy as RG3: Bye Week

Avery Dorsey, Staff Writer

My worst luck came along in week two. Not only did my first overall pick, Adrian Peterson, get placed on the exempt/commissioner’s permission list, making him inactive, my fantasy team was on a bye week due to our nine team league. There’s good and bad that comes out of a bye week though. The good thing is that it gives me week to reconstruct my team and see how my new pickups do in week two. The bad thing is that Darren Sproles, Jordy Nelson, and Antonio Gates went off with no one to crush under their wrath.

The triple threat combined for 76 fantasy points. Jordy Nelson won the game for the Packers on an 80 yard sprint to the endzone. This was just a chunk of his 209 receiving yard performance earning him 26 fantasy points. Darren Sproles led the Philadelphia Eagles to a 30-27 victory, sparked by his crafty 31 year old moves. He busted his way through the Indianapolis Colts defense for 23 fantasy points on 152 receiving yards and 26 rushing yards for a touchdown. Antonio Gates was probable at the time and not even guaranteed to play a single down against the Seahawks, but that didn’t stop him from being Philip Rivers go-to guy. Gates went to the house three times (three touchdowns) on seven receptions for 96 receiving yards.

Like I said before in my previous column, consistency is key to a good team.  Two weeks into the fantasy football season, the Panthers defense/special teams and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson have proven to be solid for me no matter what phases them. The Panther’s defense picked up where they left off last year, allowing only 21 points in two games. Reaping three fumble recoveries and three interceptions off of their prey, the Panther’s defense/special teams has earned 12 and 13 fantasy points. Russell Wilson may not throw the football much but he’s very efficient, completing 19-28 and 17-25 passes in the first two games, for a combined four touchdowns, zero interceptions, 393 passing yards, and 17 fantasy points each game. His stats may not be out of this world but they’re steady and constructive.

A good team is nice and all, but the ultimate goal is the playoffs.  The playoffs can be a make or break moment depending on sleeper players that can either boom or bust.  After my week one performance, I reconstructed my whole squad, picking up a handful of risking players.

After having a rookie breakout game consisting of 110 yards and two touchdowns for 23 points, wide receiver Allen Hurns was a must pick up as well as a risk, considering it was only week one and he’s a rookie who plays for the disappointing Jacksonville Jaguars. It proved to be a bust because in week two he only had two receptions for 13 yards for one fantasy point, showing that you can never know how NFL players will perform each week. Justin Forsett, running back for the Ravens, seemed like a strong pick up after getting 14 points in week one, but that idea was crushed when he only got eight carries for 56 yards compared to the Ravens other running back, Bernard Pierces’, 22 carries for 96 rushing yards.

As you already know, Antonio Gates had a career game at his old age of 34 for 27 fantasy points, while 23 year old rookie from Towson, Terrance West, picked up 14 fantasy points on 68 yards rushing and one touchdown. West will continue to be productive while running back Ben Tate is injured (knee).  Similar to veteran tight end Antonio Gates, wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. (35) has been targeted 25 times in two games. Even though he has only caught 13 of those, he his Flacco’s main target, accounting for 71 yards in week two against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
