Welcome back to Rising Sun! Today, we’re going to take a look at a film that has been dominating the box office in Japan, and is set to battle against our American blockbusters.

It’s unquestionable that fans all over the world adore Dragon Ball Z. Akira Toriyama’s epic saga about the Saiyan warrior Son Goku was one of the shows that brought anime to America. So whenever there’s a new Dragon Ball Z movie, fans will for sure watch it.

So when Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ premiered in Japan on April 18th, as the first Japanese film to be screened in IMAX 3D, it wasn’t surprising to see the film trump Furious 7 at the box office, bringing in $15.35 million for Toei Company, Ltd. and 20th Century Fox, who will be releasing Resurrection ‘F’ in American theaters this summer with an English dub produced by licensor Funimation Productions.

The new film sees Goku’s archenemy Frieza, the one responsible for the destruction of Planet Vegeta, being brought back to life with the power of the Earth Dragon Balls. Going against the advice of his men, Frieza seeks revenge against Goku. Toei Company, Ltd. has posted a sequence of trailers for the movie on YouTube, along with a video showing four minutes of the film.

The animation looks crisp and colorful, as much top quality as last year’s Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods. The fight choreography is geniusly conducted. It’s thrilling to see Goku swat away thousands of energy razors, especially considering that the last time he fought Frieza, he had to lure one into his path. While the voice acting in Japanese is questionable, Masako Nozawa pulls a lot of emotion into playing Goku and his son Gohan, and fans will enjoy the return of Beerus and Whis from Battle of the Gods.

I’ve only seen the clips provided by Toei Company, Ltd., but Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ looks like a film poised to dominate this summer, and with a new series called Dragon Ball Super coming out this July, Dragon Ball fans are in for a unforgettable summer.
