Welcome back to Rising Sun. Today, we’ll talk about one of anime’s most famous directors, Hayao Miyazaki.

Hayao Miyazaki first entered the animation industry at Toei Animation, afterwards joining TMS and later co-founding Studio Ghibli. The first movie he directed, Lupin III: The Castle of Caligostro, has become a classic since it premired in 1979 and has inspired scenes in American movies, like the famous clock tower in The Great Mouse Detective and even a scene from The Simpsons Movie.

The Castle of Caligostro, a sequel to the Lupin III TV series Miyazaki worked on, begins with master thief Arsene Lupin III and his cohort Daisuke Jigen making a break for it after robbing millions of dollars from the Monaco National Casino. Unfortunately, the money is all Goat Bills, counterfeits so much like the real deals only the most well trained eye can tell the difference. After throwing away all the money, literally, the two set off towards the Duchy of Caligostro to investigate. During their trip, they learn that the regent, Count Caligostro, plans on forcing the duchy’s princess, Lady Clarisse, to marry him to obtain an ancient treasure. Lupin, being the ladies man he is, decides to stop him.

The action throughout the movie is exciting and humorous, and Miyazaki manages to create one of the most beautiful fictional countries ever seen in a movie of it’s type. As more characters join the cast, including samurai Goemon Ishikawa XIII (who complains that the things he slices are unworthy of his blade) and the obsessive Inspector Zenigata, it quickly turns from a serious adventure to a wacky one. The movie also features an all star cast, even in both of the English dubs. And to top it all off, Miyazaki comes up with the most unique way to bring down a villain. (sorry, no spoilers)

So those looking for a action-adventure film that brings in a lot of comic relief or if you want to see a anime film with historical value, look no further than Hayao Miyazaki’s Lupin III: The Castle of Caligostro on Hulu.
