Welcome back to Rising Sun. Today’s post is about a fan-favorite series that aired on Cartoon Network.

Many anime fans fondly remember Ranma 1/2 as one of the shows that showed America that anime has charm and heart. So when Cartoon Network picked up the rights to series creator Rumiko Takahashi’s next series, InuYasha: A Feudal Fairy Tale, fans raced to the network’s late night block Adult Swim.

InuYasha is a historical action series set in the Japanese Era of Warring States. On the day of Kagome Higurashi’s fifteenth birthday, she falls down a dry well in her family’s temple. When she climbs out, Kagome realizes she is in the feudal ages. When the nearby village is attacked by a demon, Kagome is left with no choice but to release a half-demon named InuYasha, who seeks the mystical Shikon no Tama, a jewel with fearsome demonic power. When the jewel is shattered, Kagome and InuYasha are forced to team up to look for it.

It’s a incredibly tense series, but it has the same charm that made Ranma so beloved at the core. We have a immature male protagonist who slowly grows up throughout the series, a female protagonist with talent but is prone to fits of temper, and a fair bit of humor and romance balanced in. Hearing Kagome shout “Sit, boy!” is always hilarious, because it causes InuYasha to fall down on his face. It gets a bit long, but all those “Sit”s surely make up for it.

If you’re looking for a show that balances action, romance and the creepier side of history, InuYasha on Netflix and Hulu is perfect for you.
