The new security system that began getting installed last May is getting closer to being finished and changes continue to be made. The system inputs many innovations around the school which cause changes to many people’s routines, including teachers.

Teachers hope that the new security system provides even better prevention.

“The security system is kind of like a bicycle helmet, you don’t need it until you actually crash so I hope we never have to find out how good it is, but if we do I hope that it’s one that allows us to prevent anything bad from happening,” English teacher Drew Baranowski said.

Many people are questioning whether the new security system put in place is actually necessary to the school and the people who attend it. While some people think that there is no reason to change the old system, others feel that the change was vital to the well-being of everyone.

“It allows them to worry about the things they should be worrying about rather than their own personal safety,” Baranowski said.

There was also questions on where the money for this system came from.

“I think all this money was a bond that came in. I’ve been told it’s not increasing any of your taxes,” Officer Greg Merchant said.

Throughout the school, the talk of the students is the use of ID’s to enter the school after 7:40 a.m. Opposite of the majority of student opinions, teachers lean toward a positive look on the subject.

“I think when it got added last year the majority of teachers believed it was a good thing because we have so many doors and there is a lack of supervision because there’s a smaller amount of teachers compared to say that of ten years ago,” social studies teacher Emily Fossoh said, “So the perspective of the key cards and having the doors locked is a good thing.”

The new key cards should not cause any sort of major change to the teachers’ routines and their access to any part of the school.

“…the teacher’s can go anywhere in the building with their key card just as they did before,” Merchant said.

Many people think that the system will not be able to completely prevent any sort of inside tragedy even with the placement of the new system.

“I think it could help reduce the probability but not necessarily prevent it,” Fossoh said.

The transition from the old system to the new system, call the Raptor system, is difficult and long. The system seems to be viewed more positively than negatively by the teachers because it’s something that can help better ensure the safety of everyone within the school.

“I think when it got added last year the majority of teachers believed it was a good thing because we have so many doors and there is a lack of supervision because there’s a smaller amount of teachers compared to say that of 10 years ago,”  Fossoh said. “…I think that because of things that have happened over the past few years it’s kind of painless and easy to handle.”
