Many high school students from SM South haven’t said the Pledge of Allegiance since elementary school, but not anymore. Since late September, every Monday students in their third hour stand up and say the pledge.

“It’s important to me because in my opinion everyone should love their country and this is showing that SM South cares about it,” sophomore Joe McAtee said.

The Kansas state statute 72-5308; states that Kansas public schools have to say the pledge once a week.

“The state board decides what’s appropriate for the district to do, so the statute is very vague,” associate principal Nicholas Platko said.
