Rising Sun: Galaxy Angel is Sweet and Silly

Hey there! It’s time for yet another Rising Sun, and today’s show is the funniest thing I’ve watched since My Neighbor Seki.

The show in question is Galaxy Angel, a off-the-wall comedy adapted from the somewhat more serious dating sim* of the same name. The series revolves around a happy-go-lucky young woman named Milfeulle, who joins the interstellar military’s all-female Angel Brigade, determined to do whatever it is they do. There’s just two little problems. 1.) They have no idea what that is and 2.) Each of her colleagues are complete nuts in their own ways.

It’s incredibly silly and over the top, and it has its own little charm. Each 15-minute episode revolves around each member of the Angel Brigade’s memorable quirks. Milfeulle is insanely lucky and somewhat ditzy, Ranpha is a hopeless guy chaser, Forte is a gun-nut, Mint is a full-body costume lover and Vanilla takes her religion more seriously than anything else. While each episode is inconclusive and self-contained, it’s still incredibly funny. One of my favorite scenarios is this: Ranpha and Forte attract a huge debt at a casino, so they turn to Milfeulle for help. Right when they think they’re screwed, a shooting star comes out of nowhere and destroys the casino, also invalidating their debt.

The silly scenarios are supplemented by a great aesthetic style. Each character is designed in a distinct and memorable fashion, allowing you to distinguish them by outfit style and hair color alone. The backgrounds are pleasing to the eyes and compliment the characters very well. And thankfully, there isn’t too much of what we anime fans call “fanservice”.

For those looking for nothing more than a series which is sweet and silly and nothing intense, Galaxy Angel on Hulu should suit your interest.

*A dating sim is a text and static image-based computer game where the player’s actions determines which one out of numerous possible significant others the protagonist is paired with. A good example is Tokimeki Memorial on the PlayStation.
