Creating homemade valentines, cardboard boats, and sculptures were all part of National Art Honor Society’s way of trying to get artwork out to the community.

For a dollar on Valentine’s Day you could send a card to your secret admirer or teacher and it was be delivered to them on Friday, Feb. 12.  All of the money collected from the valentines was going to be put towards an art trip they hoped to take to St. Louis.

“It was fun to see people’s reaction while receiving the valentine’s,” senior Morgan Huggins said.

Youth Art Month started in March and once a week on the announcements there was an  art quote, along with sculptures on display around the school.  Coming up March 29  cardboard boat races begin. Each member will construct his or her own cardboard boat and see whose boat will be the fastest.  Kids Day is Saturday, April 23 and the members will create art projects with the kids.

The club is open to all types of artistically driven students but some requirements are teacher recommendations and a 3.0 GPA. They meet the first Thursday of every month and the singular chapter committees meet more often.

“My goals for NAHS this year were mainly to increase my involvement at South and also to have the opportunity to use, and in turn, grow my artistic imprint on my school and my community,” senior Rachel Dukes said.

Dukes has high hopes for the upcoming events and is excited to see events come together.
