Nothing but excuses for Senior Skip Day

Ferris Bueller is a spectacular role model when it comes to spending a day away from school including the glorious Senior Skip Day. A day all seniors look forward to. The day of skipping has been an American tradition for ages. Students know when it is, teachers know when it is, even administators know that on the Monday after prom most seniors probably won’t be in class.

“Here are the facts,” associate principal Nicholas Platko said:

  • It’s the Monday after prom
  • It does count as an unexcused absence, but it doesn’t count against seniors being able to wave finals

Administration understands that this sacred day is a right af passage for seniors.

“It’s just another day,” Platko said.

Teachers understand that most of their seniors will be “sick” that day so they plan for it. “I know ahead of time, so I plan for it. I make sure we’re not doing anything the seniors would have to make up. I’m all for it [Senior Skip Day], I think it’s a great way to end the year”, social studies teacher Jakie Turner said.

When the school was new and shiny 50 years ago, seniors planned special events for this sick day. Sometimes there would be picnic, and other times everyone would go to a baseball game.

“It has changed since my day though, when I did it, it was an organized thing. The whole day was planned we had a picnic,” Turner said.

Now a days there is no specific planned activity. Seniors just get to chill out, sleep in, maybe even grab lunch with some friends. However several unfortunate seniors had to come back into school to take the pysch AP exam like senior Emily Anderson,

“I have to come back to take an AP test It kinda sucks, At least I get to sleep in. Any day we get to skip school is a good day,” Anderson said.
