Tumbling into State

On Saturday, Oct. 22, the South gymnastics team competed at their State meet, which was hosted by South. Overall the team placed eighth, but with improved scores from team members in individual events.

“It was a good way to end the season even though we didn’t place as high as we wanted to,” senior Faith Ndavi said. “We all worked hard and had great routines.”

Being a senior, Ndavi’s last gymnastics season was this fall. She has been a part of the South gymnastics program all four years of her high school career.

“It’s hard for me to believe that my life as a gymnast is really over,” Ndavi said. “Gymnastics has become a home for me, and these coaches and the gymnasts are like my family. It’s really sad that it’s over, but  I’m glad I had the opportunity to be a gymnast here at South.”

Due to a lack of coaches, judges and funding in Kansas gymnastics, the 2016 season could possibly be the last one for all team members.

“We aren’t 100 percent sure it’s the last season,” Ndavi said.

There is still an 80 percent chance that gymnastics will continue to be a Kansas sport in the next year. To help show support, tweet out the hashtag, “#SaveKansasHSGymnastics”, to the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
