Singing Away at Cabaret

Tara Phillips, A&E Editor

The choirs kicked off the evening with a night filled with jazz and choreographed dances.

The cafeteria was transformed into a room with table cloths lined with delicate pastries and tea light candles. The ceilings were filled with strings of lights and the stage was nicely decorated in serious tones of black and blue.

The evening consisted of both soloists and choirs singing well known music such as Frank Sinatra and songs from the musical “Cabaret.” Soloists consisted of singers such as Zack Russell, Celeste Kincaid and Zach Greer. The choirs present themselves in a professional manner to the audience.

Parents of singers gathered around tables and in chairs to enjoy watching their kids perform well known songs, some that even brought nostalgia to the room. Classmates also came to enjoy their fellow peers show off their talents of singing and dancing.

Choirs such as South Corral, Heritage, Chanticleers, Chamber Choir and Men’s Choir performed songs that they had been rehearsing for paying audiences.

Evening of Cabaret helps raise money to contribute to the choirs and give them the opportunity for upgrades in choir outfits, field trips and ability to perform outside of the school more.

Choir teacher Jon Duncan and choreographer Brittany Schools help set up the entire show with the help of parents and students.

Students and parents spend hours turning the cafeteria into a stage performance ready venue. They have to set up tables, decorate tables, hang lights, and set up the stage and the curtains that are put around the stage. Students from Repertory Theatre classes help provide lighting and sound to the event.

Cabaret is an annual event that takes place in the fall and helps showcase the abilities of the choirs and the improvement that continues to increase throughout the year.
