The National Honor Society initiation that took place Nov. 3 had a bigger turnout than last year. As the new initiates filled the risers on the stage, held their candles, and said the NHS pledge, they became members of NHS. They will soon be exposed to collecting many community service hours and maintaining their 3.6 GPA, maintaining good study habits, and countless hours of academic activities.

The initiation starts off with a speech from the NHS president and then shortly after, the new initiates, with candles, come in and get ready to go up onto the stage. They then have each of their names read as they cross the stage, have their candle lit, and step onto the risers. When the initiates are all on the risers, the returning NHS initiates come in and step up onto the stage and have their names read, as they get a candle and line the walls of the auditorium. They turn the lights low, and the new initiates, as well as the returning members recite the NHS pledge. They then walk out of the auditorium and into the cafeteria for cookies and gathering amongst friends.

There were more people eligible for NHS this year than last year, most of them being juniors, which is a big plus for South. For the new initiates who are seniors, it is also a plus as they are faced with the new challenges awaiting them.

Cappuccino Day,  Monday, Nov. 21 and Tuesday, Nov.22 , members can bring brownies for community service hours. Proceeds will go to Project Graduation.
