Three schools – Shawnee Mission South High School, Indian Woods Middle School and John Diemer Elementary School – in the 103rd and Nall area were put on lockdown following a car chase with the Kansas Highway Patrol on Thursday morning.

According to KMBC, the two suspects ditched their car at the “in the 100 block of Horton Drive,” which is just down the street from all three schools. One suspect is now in custody and police are still searching for the other, according to KCTV5.

SM South principal Dr. Todd Dain sent an email to parents just after 9 a.m. this morning to inform them of the lockdown, which began at 8:30 a.m.

“Local police have contacted us to let you know of an incident taking place in the neighborhood requiring police response. Out of precaution, we placed Shawnee Mission South on lockdown this morning,” the email said. They clarified that a lockdown is when “all students are brought inside, the doors are locked, and no one is allowed in or out of the building” until the restriction is lifted.

The restriction was lifted just before 10 a.m., after one of the suspects was apprehended.
