Students got to be a kid again on Oct.29. Screaming songs at the top of their lungs, life “If Only” from movie Descendants,“Crank That” by Soulja Boy, and “Juju on the Beat” by Zay Hilfigerer and Zayion McCall, while dancing their hearts out on the gym floor.
“That was so much fun” said junior Kylenna Potts, “I’ve always been a Descendants girl and I feel like that song is just so like emotionally nostalgic, so it’s just very like, if only, it’s just such a good song”.
All these memories happened because of Trunk or Treat. This event has existed for a long time. While it used to be run by the PLS social skills class, student council co-sponsors Sara Simpson and Claire Clemons have taken over for the past five years or so. This year’s Trunk or Treat was held Oct. 29 from 6-8 p.m. in the main gym with help from StuCo and a bunch of different clubs including girls and boys basketball, cheer, BSU, journalism and more. The clubs set up their own booths with a variety of games and candy while all the participating kids and parents had to do was donate $1 or one canned good to enter. This year’s families donated a total of 122 cans.
“The proceeds go to the Johnson County Christmas Bureau, so either the canned goods or the money to help them provide for families in need in the area,” Clemons said.
This night was filled with joyful kids, parents, teachers, and students. It featured an array of colorful costumes from the kids and the high schoolers. Baseball as well as girls and boys basketball dressed up in jerseys, football players in their uniform, StuCo dressed as Disney characters, cheer as trolls, and KSMS as men in black.
“Our team bonding committee on cheer that we were just brainstorming some fun ideas for a whole group costume that we could do.In the past years, we’ve been minions and just a bunch of fun little things like that but we decided to be trolls this year because it’s very much upbeat about a lot of different characters that everyone could be,” senior Joselyn Ridgway said.
Trunk or treat was a place where you can make memories while having fun with the younger and older generation. If that was because you danced with each other, laughed together, high-fived after winning the dunk contest. It’s an event where you can forget your school troubles, make friends with a five year old, and just have fun.
“I was hosting a cornhole game for BSU and there’s this cute little girl, maybe like two or three and she was like ‘hi, can i play with you?’ and it was so adorable. And she kept trying for like a couple minutes to get the sack in the hole and then she finally did, and I gave her so much candy. It was so cute,” junior Deser’ee Mponezya said.
