Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, came out in theaters March 20, but I personally saw it in theaters March 28. The movie follows a scientist, Ryland Grace, who was sent out along with two other astronauts in order to save humanity from extinction. The only issue, Grace is the sole survivor and he can’t even remember why he’s on the ship. As his memories slowly come back Grace remembers that the sun is gradually dimming due to a little microbe called astrophage. This microbe has affected almost every star near Earth, except one; Tau Ceti. Humanity has a few decades left before the sun gets too dim for life to sustain. Grace must now come to the realization that he must save all of humanity alone. That is, until an alien there for the same reason appears. Together they must learn how to communicate in order to work together and save their planets from extinction.
There were a lot of things that I thought were great about this movie. One thing I loved was this movie wasn’t told in a linear timeline throughout it, we only get information as Grace remembers it. This really allowed me to understand what Grace was going through and how he overcame it, you get to see how Grace perseveres despite barely remembering anything. As we get more and more of his memories shown you can see that Grace, at first, was a normal guy. He was an average middle school science teacher who just had a passion for science. Despite this he is one of three people chosen to be a part of this great opportunity to save the world, which gives viewers this sort of mystery as to why and how he’s there.
As Grace’s memories slowly start to unfold you get to see how present Grace is reacting to it all, which isn’t too good, until an alien named Rocky appears. Rocky is in the same boat as Grace, he’s there to save his planet from the astrophage too and just so happens to also be the only survivor on his ship. The friendship between Rocky and Grace is truly amazing, as they work together to save their planets they also save each other along the way.
Besides the story of it all, I thought the CGI and cinematography of the movie was amazing. There are so many breathtaking scenes in the movie that truly made me more curious as to what else is out there. Typically in movies that take place in outer space you don’t see much color, you typically see more dimmed down shades but nothing vibrant. In Project Hail Mary, however, you get to see these beautiful mixes of bright colors all over, in planets, astrophage, and really just every scene.
I would definitely recommend seeing this movie if you get the chance. The movie will be streaming on Prime early May to late summer 2026, according to The Economic Times. This is a great movie to watch if you start getting bored during the summer, although it’s almost three hours long, it’s definitely worth your time. The movie was an amazing heartfelt story that showcased that bravery isn’t something you are born with or not, it’s something you gain when you find people to be brave for. Project Hail Mary is also a book, unfortunately I haven’t read it but if you like Project Hail Mary as a movie I’d read the book too!
