By now, students should have submitted their enrollment forms, as the deadline was Feb. 1. For those who have yet to submit their forms, your options are limited. Any student who didn’t submit their form on time will have their schedule picked for them by their counselor, who will select their classes based on graduation requirements and likely won’t choose the specific classes the student may want. If you talk to your counselor you may be able to recover some classes of your choosing, but your counselor will be hesitant to make any changes.
The deadline rules are the same as they are every year, but something new to this year is the four-year plan. Implemented last school year, the four-year plan was created to help students form a solid plan for what classes they would take over their high school careers. It serves as a way for students to get an idea of what classes they want to take earlier on, be aware of classes that require pre-requisites, and create a path that lines up with their interests.
“It’s more so of students finding an interest pathway and then using that interest pathway to create a four-year plan,” counselor Chris Shelby said. “Which then allows them to use that four-year plan to streamline enrollment and course selections.”
Xello and YouScience are both spectacular ways to figure out interests which could help with picking classes you will naturally excel at. It works hand-in-hand with the four-year plan to help students enroll in classes that will be the best fit for them and can even help them make a plan for after high school.
“When students have completed their Xello and YouScience, they can match up with things that they like to do as well as [things that are compatible with] the way their brain operates,” Shelby said. “Which tells us usually what they’re gonna do pretty well at.”
