What does Y2K mean? The term “Y2K” means the year 2000, and originally wasn’t even used for fashion. Originally the term was used to describe a possible computer bug that happened on January 1st, 2000. Up until then computers abbreviated the years to the last two digits, for example, 1988 would be seen as 88. So, people were worried that computers would say 00 as 1900 or 0000. They feared that this would glitch out the computers and cause them to shut down, worldwide, which would have caused a dangerous amount of damage. The US prepared for this bug four years prior to it, and in total the US spent approximately 100 billion dollars, only 8 billion came from the government. Some say all the preparation wasn’t worth it, as some countries didn’t even spend money and had no issues, but others argue that it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
Although the term Y2K was used to describe something else, it’s now used to describe the fashion and the pop culture of the 2000s. A lot of fashion brands will use the term Y2K to catch a shoppers attention. Brands that were popular in the 2000s have recently gotten popular again, with Juicy Couture and UGG’s becoming really popular recently. Brands like Juicy Couture are embracing this comeback and are still selling their famous and iconic tracksuits. At the top of the Juicy Couture tracksuit page they describe it as, “Track is back? We never left, babe. Suit up with timeless tops and bottoms in velour, terry, and more” – Juicy Couture. Of course, many staple items have made their way back too.
“Ive noticed it’s become quite a trend in the past year or two that people have started to, almost like, reclaim that fashion sense that they had in the early 2000s and mid 2000s.” senior Nixon Hatchcock said. (Could be here or like the main quote at the end or something)
Low rise jeans
Low rise jeans were seen in almost every outfit in the 2000s, with their waist line going below the belly button they made an outfit iconic and daring. Although low rise jeans are back, they have a bit of a different look than the ones from the 2000s. Low rise jeans back then were made to fit someone perfectly, occasionally having a little flair but mostly they wanted it to be the perfect size. Low rise jeans now want more of a flair at the bottom and want them to be baggy.
“Everything used to be very tight, low rise, and I feel like that baggy oversized look is coming back a little bit.” FAIDS teacher Ms Bilger said.
UGG’s
UGG’s have also made a great comeback, with them being a popular trend seen among teenagers and even adults. UGG’s are a great fuzzy winter boot that can be worn not just as boots for the winter but as boots to go with an everyday outfit, occasionally even as slippers. UGG’s have recently become popular again and have been seen being paired with leggings and an oversized sweater. UGG’s are made from high quality fur making them very warm, while looking stylish.
“UGG’s for sure [are coming back].” Choir Director Mr. Duncan said.
Although many women’s fashion trends are making their comeback, that doesn’t mean men’s fashion isn’t either. Many men’s 2000s fashion looks are back and better than ever. Back in the 2000s, teenagers used to wear very baggy, skater boy kinds of clothes. These kinds of clothes have recently become very popular, with teens trying to replicate that same baggy look, although baggy jeans are leading the trend.
Baggy Jeans
Baggy jeans were everywhere in the 2000s and oftentimes they would sink down and had to be held up by a belt, to them that was the point. Now, baggy jeans can be seen almost anywhere when you walk out. They provide a comfortable bagginess and have a very trendy look to them. They’ve become a staple clothing that completes almost any look.
“Ive seen a little bit more of the baggier pants” Ms. McCormick said.
Layered Shirts
Of course an outfit isn’t complete without a baggy shirt and a long sleeve shirt to compliment it. A shirt, oftentimes with a design of some sort on it, and a long sleeve shirt underneath were all the rage in the 2000s. Some were more baggy looks, with a baggy shirt and more of a ruffled long sleeve shirt, but some shirts were more of a perfect fit. This layered look has made its way into fashion today, with many teens wearing long sleeve shirts underneath their shirts even today. Although, typically it’s taken on more of the baggy approach with even some long sleeve shirts being replaced with hoodies instead.
“I love the long sleeved t under the short sleeved t. I think that is a great look.” Duncan said.
Needless to say, many 2000s fashion trends have recently come back in style, sometimes with a new twist to them. The fashion and style isn’t the only thing from the 2000s coming back.
Animal Prints
A lot of 2000s animal prints have gotten really popular, especially cheetah prints. If you look around any store it won’t take you long to see some form of cheetah print or leopard print. These animal prints can be seen anywhere from clothes to accessories and even on furniture. Back in the 2000s animal print was all the craze, whether it was used for decoration in a room, or it was used to dazzle up an outfit. Now, it’s back and better than ever, with all kinds of animal print being everywhere. Animal prints are being used in shirts, jackets, accessories, anything you can think of most likely has a version of animal print on it.
“Some of the prints and patterns in general are coming back.” – Bilger said.
Although we’ve heard what’s already coming back, let’s hear what teachers think should come back.
