Swig is a drink place that specializes in dirty soda: a concoction of soda, flavored syrups, creams, and other toppings. Swig offers a large selection of signature dirty soda mixes, each with catchy names like “Waikiki” or “Riptide”. If you don’t like the combination of the signature drinks, you can customize them or even make your own drink entirely using the syrups and other components on the menu. In addition to the standard dirty soda, there are also other types of drinks on the menu: refreshers, which have a water or sparkling water base, revivers, which have an energy drink base, iced teas, and hot chocolate. There’s also a short non-drink section of the menu that has cookies and pretzel bites on it.
This Bliss (dirty soda): Diet Coke, Cranberry syrup, Fresh lime. 7/10
This Bliss is a refreshing fruity drink with a sour undertone from the fresh lime, making it taste like a fruitier lemonade with a soda base. The use of Diet Coke allows for the other flavors to be more prominent, and the syrup tones down the bubbles, making the drink feel smoother. Though the drink is supposed to have cranberry syrup in it, there isn’t a distinct cranberry flavor, making it feel like more of a fruit punch.
Dirty Little Secret (dirty soda): Dr pepper, Coconut, Pineapple, vanilla cream. 9/10
The coconut syrup pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the Coke, making The Dirty Little Secret a delightful drink for coconut lovers. Though the drink’s predominant flavors are very pleasant, the other components are overpowered by the strength of the coconut. The lack of pineapple makes the drink feel less tropical than it presents, and the vanilla could benefit the flavor if it were more present, but overall the taste of the drink is very solid.
Mistletoe Madness: Water, SF vanilla, cranberry, strawberry puree, fresh lemon. 8/10
The Mistletoe Madness is a seasonal refresher that comes out during the winter. Unlike This Bliss, the cranberry flavor is not only present but also makes up the main flavor of the drink. The strawberry and lemon add to the fruitiness of the drink but don’t overpower the cranberry and vanilla, making this drink refreshing and giving it a nostalgic wintery flavor.
Swig was founded in Utah in 2010 but has just now made it to Kansas this year. So why did it take 15 years for Swig to make it to KC? Swig is featured in the reality TV show The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, in which the group of Mormon women the show is centered around are often shown going to Swig. This got the franchise money and popularized the existence of dirty soda, allowing Swig to expand to other states.
